As a self confessed natural history geek David Attenborough Documentaries have always been my TV Programmes of choice. I have always been intrigued by different species take on evolution. Owls are apex predators with every sense being honed to perfection from their pupils to every feathers colour and placement around their face evolved channel sounds into their ears like a satellite to hunt. As cute as they look this is all functional and not aesthetic. By removing the sense of scale these images compare the different species by their evolutionary features as opposed to size as some owls were pint size and some had a wignspan of 6 foot! They are widely know as a wise animal but their keepers assured me they did not mind having their photos taken as their main concerns are where their next prey is, so were interested in me for a few minutes before releasing I had no food so they would then turn their head around 180 degrees to look away. An evolutionary function many camera shy humans would love!! I thought this was a funny way of telling me thats enough. This project has also got me fascinated into defence mechanisms with the adjustable pigments of the Chameleon and armour of the bearded dragon, each spike serving to protect itself from its specific hunters.
